What I’m Planting In My Zone 3 Garden In 2023
Right before the new year rolls around, I plan out my entire Zone 3 garden for the upcoming season. I set my gardening goals, place my seed order and start planning when various seeds will need to be started indoors. And I love sharing this process with you! So here’s a look at what I’m growing in my Zone 3 garden in 2023.

Before we get into it — if you’re in the thick of planning a garden and feeling a little lost, I got you!
There’s dozens of resources on my blog to help you in each stage of the gardening season.
Here’s a few of my other past garden-planning blogs that will smoothly guide you into next season:

If it’s your first year growing a garden, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Start slow and remember, your garden will only get better each season.
With that being said, if you are a new grower please don’t follow my list exactly. And even if you are a seasoned gardener, you shouldn’t use my list as an exact guide.
My goal with sharing what I plant in my Zone 3 garden is to give inspiration and an idea of the varieties I’ve had the most success with in a Northern garden.
Our gardens are likely different sizes, in different micro-climates and maybe even have different soil types.
So use this post as a guide but not as an instruction manual!
Alright, now let’s start with my gardening goals for this season.
My Zone 3 Garden Goals For 2023
I always set my goals before I place any seed orders so that I only purchase plants that will help me meet my objectives.
I encourage you to do the same! It really helps make the garden feel more intentional while also ensuring you don’t just buy for the sake of buying.
For 2023 my gardening goals are:
1. Grow more storage veggies so we can eat from the garden further into Fall/Winter.
2. Use the greenhouse for short season crops primarily so we get several succession plantings from it throughout April-November.
3. Plant more long-blooming flowers so we can enjoy them for most of the season.
4. Prioritize pollinator friendly plants.

Every year, I plant a mix of herbs, flowers, veggies and fruit in our garden.

Now for an official look at what I’ll be planting in the garden in 2023!

Any items with a * beside them mean they’re new to me and I’ve never grown before.
