25 of the best holiday gift ideas for gardeners 2021

For Beginner, Rookie Gardeners

GrowOya Hands-Free Waterer (exclusive discount code!)

The GrowOya (pronounced Grow-Olla) is a brilliant life hack that will reduce the amount of time you spend watering the garden. Weekend away at the lake? No problem. The GrowOya is a porous terracotta pot that you fill with water and bury in your garden bed. The moisture seeps out slowly through the walls to water your plants right at the roots. Refill it every few days to keep your soil and plant roots hydrated. Brilliant, right?

Get 5% off your purchase of the GrowOya with code SOILTOSOUL at checkout!

This is on my own wish-list for our raised beds! And it’s great for all types of plants — flowers, veggies and herbs.

Hula Hoe Hand Weeder

I would never lie to you and say that weeding can be fun but….the Hula Hoe Hand Weeder makes it so.much.easier. Truly a game changer. I love this tool and have been using it for years.

Known as the “weeder with wiggle,” the sharp blade gets below the root of the weed and easily pulls it up. The short handle makes it comfortable and pain-free to use. Great for weeding between rows of plants and in hard to reach places.

Sea Magic Fertilizer (available in the shop!)

A perfect stocking stuffer! Sea Magic is my most fav all-purpose, organic and plant-based fertilizer. Perfect for all your gardening needs, including houseplants, seedlings, veggies, flowers and herbs.

Sea Magic is available to shop exclusively here on fromsoiltosoul.ca!

Sea Magic is made from seaweed harvested from the cold, clear waters of the North Atlantic. It is specially dried to preserve all nutrients and pressed into a powder. It’s so easy to use. Just mix the package with 1 gallon of water to create your concentrated formula. Then, add 1 tbsp to a litre of water and apply to plants once per month.

Heavy-Duty Seed Starting Trays

The perfect gift for new gardeners getting into the world of seed starting. These heavy-duty seed trays by Bootstrap Farmer are built to last many, many seasons. A statement you typically can’t make with the regular plastic seed starting trays. Made from recycled plastic, these trays are seriously durable and better for the environment.

Trays come in various sizes and cell amounts for you to choose from as well as different pack sizes. I like the 72 cell trays for starting different herbs and veggies.

High Yield Vegetable Gardening Book

This is the book to read for beginner gardeners looking to get serious about growing their own food. It’s the book I come back to year after year to plan my garden layout and to determine how much of each vegetable I need to grow.

High Yield Vegetable Gadening is written by the folks at Seattle Urban Farm Co. It’s an essential gardening tool for rookie gardeners, complete with scheduling charts, spacing guides and field notes.

70s Vibes Cotton Gardening Gloves (available in the shop!)

Every new gardener needs an adorable pair of gardening gloves. Because there’s nothing cute about dirt under your nails. I love these 70s-style patterned gloves. They’re a light weight jersey cotton material made to fit small-medium sized hands.

Available to shop exclusively here on fromsoiltosoul.ca!

Machine washable. Comes with a set of three 70s style patterns.

Seed Pack Organizers

Keep your seed packs organized with these craft dividers. This is one of my go-to gardening hacks. Label each container by planting out date so when Spring comes you’re ready to plant! A great gift for new gardeners OR long-term gardeners who’s seed collections are getting out of control….a good problem to have!

Here’s a video that shows how I label and use my organizers.

For Expert Gardeners

Soil Blocker (enter to win a $50 West Coast Seeds GC!)

Level up your seed starting game with this tool from West Coast Seeds. It’s a waste free solution to seed starting — I love it!

You use this hand-held device by pushing it into wet soil. Squeeze the handle and it ejects 4 individual blocks of soil measuring 2 inches on each side.

Niki Jabbour’s Book — The Year Round Vegetable Gardener

The Year Round Vegetable Gardener is a must-read book for gardeners ready to extend their growing season into the Winter. Nova Scotia-based gardener, Niki Jabbour shares her techniques for gardening year round.

I love this book, and love Niki! She’s been a reoccurring guest on The Grow Guide podcast and I’ve been on her radio show, The Weekend Gardener, a few times too.

Unusual Seed Collection from Row 7 Seeds

Give the gift of unusual seeds from Row 7 Seeds. A great gift for the foodie gardener.

Row 7 is a seed company built by chefs, farmers and breeders. Their objective is to enhance the flavour of traditional veggies by cross pollinating new varieties. Some of their more exciting, experimental seeds include Badger Flame Beets and Tetra Squash.

Full Spectrum Grow Light (enter to win a $50 West Coast Seeds GC!)

An ideal gift for gardeners who love indoor gardening, growing microgreens and/or seed starting. These SunBlaster Grow Lights are my preferred brand! They come with the tube, ballast, link cable, electric cord and 2 mounting clips.

Worm Composting Bin

Turn your kitchen scraps and food waste into high quality fertilizer for your garden. This is a great solution to easily compost year-round. Worms and bedding material are included, so you can get composting right away!

This specific worm factory by Nature’s Footprint comes highly recommended by fellow gardeners. It is apparently the worm composter to have.

Floating Mesh Row Cover (enter to win a $50 West Coast Seeds GC!)

No more stressing over pests eating away at your plants! I use this row cover from West Coast Seeds each season in our garden. It has helped me grow beautiful cabbages, broccoli and salad greens. It creates a physical barrier between your crops and insects, like cabbage moths, slugs and aphids.

The Mesh Row Cover has a fine mesh that sits over galvanized steel hoops. The ends seal with an optional drawstring. You can easily water over the top or set up drip irrigation below.

Acurite Wireless Weather Station

If you’ve ever listened to The Grow Guide podcast then you’ve certainly heard me talk about my love for my digital weather station. I actually have three sensors (one in the garden, chicken coop and greenhouse) so I know what the temp is outside at all times. Acurite is the brand I trust and use.

This is a great gift for a more advanced grower looking to extend into the shoulder seasons. But it would also make a great Dad-gift. Dad’s love the weather, right?

For All Plant Lovers

Wicker Harvest Basket

A gorgeous wicker basket makes harvesting flowers, herbs and veggies that much more beautiful. I like shopping on Etsy for my baskets and supporting small makers. Or, hit up your local thrift store! There’s many beautiful designs to choose from.

Floret Flower Puzzle

A perfect gift for flower and puzzle lovers alike! You are likely familiar with Floret Flower, the incredible Washington-based flower farm that has inspired thousands (if not millions) of gardeners to grow uncommon, heirloom flowers. They transformed some of their most famous flower photos into puzzles

This 500 piece double-sided puzzle features the flower farm truck on one side and a beautiful dahlia ombre on the other.

Mini Mushrooms Garden Decor (available in the shop!)

I fell in love with these mini mushrooms as soon as I saw them and knew I had to sell them here on From Soil to Soul. They’re the perfect addition to a raised bed or container. They’ll give your garden that whimsical fairy garden vibe.
Mushrooms come in a pack of 4 colours – pink, yellow, blue, red.

Bogs Garden Shoes

Bogs make my fav boots of all time that I wear in the garden, for winter hiking and in the wet and mud that comes with Spring.  They’re a sustainably focused brand that uses natural rubber and algae-based EVA foot beds to reduce their carbon footprint.

Their garden shoes are easy to slip on and off and 100% water-proof from top to bottom.

Braided Straw Bucket Hat (available in the shop!)

Keep your skin protected and happy while in the garden with this cute braided straw bucket hats. I sourced these from a California-based company owned by two sisters who design all the hats themselves.

Shop for them here at fromsoiltosoul.ca.

Makes a great gift for a gardener or sun-lover!

Solar Pathway Lights

Light up your garden space with these pathway solar lights that cast a beautiful pattern on the ground when glowing. These are a must-have and super high quality. They also have rechargeable batteries!

And there you have it!

That’s your From Soil to Soul 2021 Gardener Gift Guide!

I encourage you to keep sustainability in mind this holiday season. Use newspaper and recycled paper to wrap gifts, avoid using name tags, bows and other single-use items that will end up in landfills and purchase from vendors who are committed to creating long lasting products.

Don’t forget to comment on this post for your chance to win a $50 gift card to West Coast Seeds. *Winner will be selected November 30, 2021. Must be located within Canada. Giveaway is sponsored by West Coast Seeds*

    Love it! Thank you!

I made my mom (rookie gardener) a DIY oya last year for her raised beds: just gorillaglue 2 unglazed ceramic pots together and then glue something over one of the drainage hole to block it (ie. Broken piece of pot). It worked great!

Have always been interested in the growoya since I first saw it at an event. Also, soil blocking also looks like a great idea. I’m currently using winstrip trays, which I love, but are more limited as they only come in one plug size. Love your idea for organizing seeds, mine are definitely out of control! Hello! I’ll be honest – I’m submitting this comment for the WC Seeds GC. Love row covers for keeping the flea beetles and moths off the brassica and this season was able to keep my plants completely bug free! Because of the size and shape of my bed (keyhole design) I had to sew two covers together to down the area and can report they’re very easy to sew. Also looking forward to using a soil blocker for the first time in my new greenhouse come the spring.
